The Course
In this six-day concentrated art course, designed to encourage instinctive confident creativity,
you will have the opportunity to experience drawing, painting, composing, layering and
manipulating the finest array of paints, pigments, pencils, and papers in unique and exciting
ways. The emphasis on personalized instruction, the freedom to follow your individual artistic
path, and the building of knowledge and skill within a creative community, is the foundation
of this retreat. Daily demonstrations, individual and group dialogue, videos and inspiring
resources are a part of each day.
A detailed list of additional artists’ supplies for the course will be sent upon your registration.
These materials have been chosen for their quality and flexibility and with the intention that
you will enjoy using them long after the course.
The Setting
You will find yourself immersed in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest in Washington
State.
The Hood Canal is a breathtaking 68-mile-long natural waterway, recognized as the
only true saltwater fjord in the contiguous United States. Sculpted by glaciers 13,000 years ago,
the dramatic contrast of deep, calm water, lush green peaks and the breathtaking, immediate
view of the Olympic Mountains rising steeply from the water's edge offer the perfect natural
setting for An Artists' Retreat.
Classes will be taught in a magnificent, spacious, light-filled studio equipped with individual
easels, large worktables, fireplace, an array of inspirational books, inspiring videos of artists'
lives, a beautiful comfortable living room for quiet contemplation, sketching, reading and
relaxing. Large verandas provide sweeping panoramic views over the flower and vegetable
gardens, to the mountains and the deep turquoise waters of Hood Canal and will be available
for all participants every evening until 10pm.
